Soapbox, in Love: Advice for Aspiring Artists and Illusionists

If you're an upcoming artist or illusionist, my advice is simple: be unique, be Gospel-focused, and always remember that relationships matter.

Relationships Matter

Relationships are the foundation of what we do. If your goal is simply to land the next gig or use youth and church events as a stepping stone into the secular market, reconsider your approach. Church shows are not just another opportunity for stage time; they are a responsibility. If you only want to perform without investing in the people watching, then church events may not be the right fit for you.

Your audience—students, adults, and families—need to know that you genuinely care about them. What happens to them after they leave your event? Have you made an impact beyond the applause?

Your relationship with your hosts also matters. Do you see them as more than just a connection or a paycheck? Do you recognize that they, too, are created in the image of God? When you prioritize relationships, your work becomes more than a performance—it becomes ministry.

 My brothers and sisters, believers in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ must not show favoritism. 2 Suppose a man comes into your meeting wearing a gold ring and fine clothes, and a poor man in filthy old clothes also comes in. 3 If you show special attention to the man wearing fine clothes and say, “Here’s a good seat for you,” but say to the poor man, “You stand there” or “Sit on the floor by my feet,” 4 have you not discriminated among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts?

Be Unique

Originality sets you apart. Don’t imitate others—create your own routines, patter, jokes, and stories. Your voice and perspective are valuable. Don’t chase an event simply because someone else performed there. Instead, focus on refining your craft and being authentically you. The right opportunities will come when you stay true to your unique calling.

Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as yourreward. You are serving the Lord Christ

Be Gospel-Focused

Never lose sight of why you do what you do. Your talent and platform are gifts from God, but they require stewardship. Hard work, humility, and a constant seeking of His will are essential for true success. Without them, even the biggest stage or loudest applause will feel empty.

At the end of the day, your legacy isn’t about how many shows you booked or how many followers you gained. It’s about the lives you touched and the message you shared. So be intentional, be authentic, and most importantly, be faithful to the calling you’ve been given.

I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 8 Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.
